A Sudden Downpour Turns May 12 Concert Into a Viral Moment
PARIS — When torrential rain swept through Taylor Swift's Eras Tour stop at La Défense Arena on May 12, her fans didn't scramble for cover. They danced.
For roughly 20 minutes near the end of the three-and-a-half-hour set, a heavy downpour soaked the sold-out crowd of 40,000. Rather than leaving the floor or seeking shelter in the stadium's seated sections, thousands of Swift's fans—known as Swifties—stayed put, spinning and singing through hits including "Shake It Off" and "Karma." Videos of fans twirling in plastic ponchos and glitter-streaked face paint quickly spread across social media, with several clips surpassing five million views on TikTok within 24 hours.
Swift's Response: "Champions of the Night"
Swift, 34, addressed the moment directly in an Instagram post shared early Monday morning, praising fans for their resilience.
"I just want to say thank you to the champions of the night," she wrote. "You danced in the rain with me and made it the most unforgettable night. I'm so grateful to have fans like you who make every show feel like a special event."
The post, which included a photo of the rain-soaked crowd illuminated by phone flashlights, garnered more than 12 million likes in its first day.
A Tour Defined by Fan Devotion
The Paris incident marks at least the third major weather event on Swift's record-breaking Eras Tour, following lightning delays in Philadelphia and Nashville in 2023. In each case, fans' willingness to endure uncomfortable conditions has become a defining feature of the concert experience—one that reinforces the unusually tight bond between Swift and her audience.
La Défense Arena, the largest indoor venue in Europe, has a retractable roof, but it remained partially open during the show. Representatives for the venue did not immediately respond to requests for comment about whether the roof was closed after the rain began.
Swift's Paris run concluded May 12 and included four nights at La Défense Arena, her only scheduled dates in France. The Eras Tour resumes in Stockholm on May 17.
