Cumbia works solo or partnered. If you're learning with a partner, here's the secret: it's conversation, not performance.
The lead guides with light hands — literally just resting the follower's hand in theirs, giving direction through subtle pressure. Opens to the side means turn. Lifting slightly means spin. Nothing aggressive. The follower's job is to stay responsive, not reactive. Small adjustments, not full commitment on every signal.
If you're solo? Cumbia actually shines without a partner. You get to own the entire groove.
Leveling Up (If You Want)
Once the basics feel automatic — they should take a few sessions — here are extensions:
Turns. Start with a simple open turn: arm extends, you walk in a circle, arm brings you back. Build from there.
Footwork variations. Crossing behind, small stamps, syncopated pauses. These add flavor once you're grooving on the foundation.
Musicality. Cumbia songs have breaks, accented drums, little moments of silence or buildup. Let those dictate your movement. Don't just execute steps — respond to the music.
