Where to Take Tap in Millersburg City: A Guide to the City's Three Standout Studios

On a Thursday evening at The Millersburg Tap Conservatory, thirty pairs of feet strike maple flooring in staggered unison as Juanita Reeves calls out a time-step variation from the front of Studio A. Reeves, a former soloist with the New York City Tap Ensemble, has shaped the conservatory's pre-professional track since founding it in 2016. It's a scene that, until recently, had few counterparts in this city of 45,000.

Today, Millersburg supports three dedicated tap academies, each with its own philosophy and student body. What changed? Local directors point to a cluster of developments: the 2018 Millersburg Arts Council grant for youth dance scholarships, the viral 2019 Riverfront Playhouse production of 42nd Street, and the pandemic-era resurgence of solo dance practice on social media. Enrollment across the three studios has more than doubled since 2017, according to city arts council estimates.

The Millersburg Tap Conservatory

Founded: 2016 | Focus: Pre-professional training

The conservatory occupies a converted warehouse on Front Street with four studios featuring sprung maple floors, live-accompaniment practice rooms with Steinway uprights, and a dedicated recording suite for student audition reels. Reeves leads a faculty of five, including Marcus Chen, who toured with Riverdance for eight years and now directs the conservatory's adult repertory company.

The flagship program is the two-year pre-professional track, which places graduates in regional companies and BFA programs at a rate of roughly 70 percent, Reeves says. "We treat tap as a concert form, not just a theatrical add-on," she notes. "That means composition class, music theory, and ensemble work from day one."

Rhythm & Sole Dance Academy

Founded: 2014 | Focus: Inclusive, cross-genre instruction

Rhythm & Sole operates out of a sunlit second-floor space on Market Street, where director Aisha Boyd has built a program deliberately open to dancers who might not fit the traditional conservatory mold. Boyd, a former public-school music teacher, offers classes for students ages three through seventy-three, including a popular seated tap program for adults with limited mobility.

The academy's Tap + Tech elective, launched in 2022, pairs fundamental tap vocabulary with rhythm-making software and loop pedals. "Students build a phrase, record it, and layer counter-rhythms on top," Boyd explains. "It gets them hearing themselves as composers, not just dancers."

Enrollment stands at approximately 140 students across all programs. Boyd says roughly 40 percent are adults, an unusually high share for a suburban studio.

Coming up: A free community rhythm workshop, open to all ages and experience levels, is scheduled for April 20 at the Millersburg Public Library.

The Tappy Feet Studio

Founded: 2012 | Focus: Community access and collaboration

The Tappy Feet Studio began as a Saturday-morning class in a church basement and now draws 90 students to its south-side location on Walnut Avenue. Co-founders Tom and Linda Okonkwo emphasize low-barrier access: no required uniforms, sliding-scale tuition, and a quarterly pay-what-you-can community class.

The studio's signature event is Tap Jam on the Plaza, a summer series held in partnership with the Millersburg Parks Department. On the third Friday of each month from June through August, students, faculty, and open-call musicians gather at Founders Plaza for ninety minutes of improvised performances. Last year's series drew an estimated 2,400 attendees across four evenings, according to the parks department.

"We wanted to take tap out of the studio and put it where people already are," Tom Okonkwo says. "The plaza has brick pavers that sound completely different from sprung floors—that becomes part of the improvisation."

Coming up: Tap Jam on the Plaza returns June 21; the Okonkwos are also organizing a citywide youth tap chorus for the Millersburg Fall Festival in October.
