Jazz dance is enjoying a quiet renaissance across rural Oklahoma—and the Okemah area is no exception. What began as scattered community classes and church-hall rehearsals has grown into a modest but spirited scene, with dancers from Okemah, Boley, and Paden now traveling for structured training in a style once confined to coastal cities.

The Rhythm Studio

The Rhythm Studio has built a reputation for refusing to treat "jazz dance" as a single monolith. Its rotating schedule includes Broadway jazz, street-jazz fusion, Latin jazz, and a seasonal Fosse technique workshop series led by instructor Mara Deluca, who trained in Chicago before relocating to east-central Oklahoma.
Classes run Tuesday through Saturday, with dedicated adult beginner slots on weekday mornings and teen advanced groups on Saturday afternoons. The studio offers a $15 drop-in trial class and semester packages starting at $180.
"Most of our adult students drove past two other towns to get here," Deluca says. "They want to know which jazz they're learning, not just 'jazz' as a catch-all."
Swing Time Academy
Location: Seminole, OK (≈40 miles southwest of Okemah)
Best for: Traditionalists and history-minded dancers
Swing Time Academy anchors its curriculum in vernacular jazz and Lindy-influenced movement, with a foundation class required for all new students regardless of prior experience. Director Calvin Roe emphasizes where the steps came from before encouraging personal interpretation.
The academy's annual Jumpin' Jive showcase has outgrown its original venue twice; in 2023 it sold out the Crystal Theatre in Okemah, drawing an audience from across Creek and Seminole counties. Roe says the 2024 edition, slated for March, will add an intergenerational set pairing teen dancers with performers over 60.
Groove Dynamics Dance Center

The Jazz Junction operates out of a renovated storefront on Broadway Street, offering the only jazz-focused classes actually inside Okemah city limits. Founded in 2021, it functions as much as a community space as a training ground, with pay-what-you-can classes on Wednesday evenings and a strict all-ages, all-backgrounds policy.
There are no mirrors in the main studio—intentionally. Director Sofia Blackbird wants dancers to feel rather than critique. The Junction's monthly Jam Sessions are informal performance gatherings where students, parents, and local musicians share the floor.
