Where to Study Flamenco in Lighthouse Point: A 2024 Guide for Every Dancer

When María Elena Suárez opened the first dedicated flamenco studio in Lighthouse Point in 2017, her Wednesday night beginner classes drew six students. This January, the waiting list topped forty. Across this small Broward County municipality, flamenco has shifted from niche curiosity to sustained cultural momentum—fueled by retirees seeking movement, young professionals craving creative outlets, and a growing cohort of competitive youth dancers.

Lighthouse Point, a 2.4-square-mile community between Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach, now supports four distinct flamenco training programs. Each occupies a different price point, aesthetic philosophy, and student profile. The studios below were selected for instructional quality, variety of approach, and accessibility to newcomers.

Note: Prices and schedules were confirmed with studio representatives in March 2024 and are subject to change.

1. Casa de la Guitarra

Best for: Traditionalists and live-music devotees

Address: 2121 NE 36th Street, near the Hillsboro Inlet
Classes: Tuesday and Thursday evenings; small-group sessions (8 students maximum)
Pricing: $140/month for twice-weekly classes; $25 drop-ins available

Rafael Morales, founder and resident guitarist, converted a 1960s ranch house into what regulars call "the least Florida room in Florida." The space centers on an Andalusian-style courtyard with hand-painted tiles and a small performance platform. Morales, who trained in Córdoba for twelve years, accompanies every class live.

"The guitar does not wait for the dancer," Morales says. "Here, you learn to listen first—to the compás, the silence, the breath of the musician. That is the old way."

Classes emphasize soleá and alegrías forms. Students wear traditional flamenco shoes from the first session; the studio maintains a lending closet for beginners unwilling to invest immediately.

2. Ritmo Flamenco Academy

Best for: Experienced dancers seeking cross-training

Address: Pompano Citi Centre vicinity (serves Lighthouse Point and surrounding areas)
Classes: Monday–Thursday afternoons and evenings; additional Saturday workshops
Pricing: $160–$220/month depending on package; hip-hop/flamenco fusion intensives priced separately

Ritmo occupies a storefront studio with Harlequin sprung floors and video playback monitors. Founder-director Dana Okonkwo, a former contemporary dancer, structures her advanced curriculum around what she terms "flamenco's architecture applied to other vocabularies." Intermediate students regularly practice marcaje footwork set to electronic rhythms.

The academy's resident company, Ritmo Fusion, premiered its hybrid work Rojo Urbano at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in February 2024. Company members often guest-teach open classes.

"People think fusion means dilution," Okonkwo says. "We treat it as translation—same grammar, different accent."

Beginners are admitted, but the studio's energy and pacing suit dancers with prior training in any technique.

3. Baile Bonita Studio

Best for: Families, absolute beginners, and casual learners

Address: 3701 N. Federal Highway, Suite 204
Classes: Morning, afternoon, and evening slots six days per week
Pricing: $85–$145/month; sibling and senior discounts available; first class free

Owner Teresa Voss built Baile Bonita on explicit accessibility. The lobby displays a "All Bodies Welcome" sign in English and Spanish. Classes range from "Mommy & Me Sevillanas" (ages 3–5 with caregiver) to adult beginner tango flamenco to a low-impact chair class for seniors.

Guest artists visit quarterly. In April 2024, dancer Ana Pérez from Seville will lead a three-day bata de cola workshop. The studio's annual showcase, held each May at the E. Pat Larkins Community Center in Pompano Beach, draws heavily from Lighthouse Point families.

"I started at fifty-seven, in orthopedic shoes," says student Patricia Werner, now in her third year. "Teresa never made me feel like I was auditioning for something I already wasn't."

4. Palacio de la Danza

Best for: Pre-professional students and serious adult amateurs

Address: 2431 NE 26th Avenue
Classes: Afternoons and evenings Tuesday–Saturday; private coaching by appointment
Pricing: $195/month for group conservatory track; privates $90/hour

Founded in 2008 by former Ballet Nacional de España member Ignacio Reyes, Palacio de la Danza operates the most formalized program in the area. The facility includes two rehearsal studios, a 90-seat
