In southeast Iowa, Letts City (population ~1,000) has become an unlikely outpost for flamenco dance. What began in 2014 when Des Moines native and Madrid-trained dancer Elena Vargas relocated to her husband's hometown has since grown into a small but active network of instruction. Today four dedicated schools operate within or just outside city limits, drawing students from Muscatine, Burlington, and across the Mississippi Valley. Whether you are testing your first llamada or preparing for a professional tablao, the area offers more structured training than most towns ten times its size.
How Flamenco Took Root in Letts City
The scene here owes its existence largely to geography and timing. Vargas opened Sol y Sombra in a renovated feed-store building on Main Street in 2016; two of her advanced students launched their own studios within four years. Meanwhile, the 2019 Iowa Arts Council grant for rural cultural programming helped fund early workshops and a small performance series that introduced flamenco to audiences who had previously encountered it only on YouTube or PBS specials. The result is not a "hub" in the Spanish sense, but a concentrated, unusually deep pool of instruction for a rural Midwestern community.
Four Flamenco Schools to Consider
Sol y Sombra Flamenco Academy
Founded by Elena Vargas, 2016
Sol y Sombra runs the most rigorous classical program in the area. Students progress through semester-long courses in tecnica, escuela bolera, and cante for dancers, with level placements determined by an informal audition. The academy's signature draw is its annual spring residency: past guests include Madrid dancer Iván Vargas (no relation, 2022) and guitarist José Luis de la Paz (2023). The school also fields a small student company that performs at regional arts festivals.

The Reyeses, both retired educators, built their curriculum around cultural literacy. Every dance student also takes a required rotation in flamenco history, compás (rhythm theory), and palmas (hand-clapping technique). The center maintains a small library of books and documentary DVDs and hosts twice-yearly lectures by visiting scholars.
