You Won't Find Five Swing Studios in a Town of 800 People
Let's get something out of the way. Wedowee, Alabama is small. Really small. The kind of place where the post office and the dollar store are both social hubs. So no, there aren't five boutique swing dance studios with state-of-the-art facilities lining Main Street.
But that doesn't mean you can't learn to swing dance here. You just have to know where to look — and be willing to piece things together a bit.
Wedowee Swing Society Is Your Best Bet
This is where most people in Randolph County who want to learn swing end up. The Wedowee Swing Society runs classes out of the community center on a rotating schedule, usually Thursday evenings. Instructors rotate too, which means you'll pick up different styles depending on who's teaching that month.
One woman I talked to — she'd been going for about a year — said she started because her doctor told her to "move more." She's now helping teach the beginner Lindy Hop class. That's the kind of community it is.
They host a social dance once a month. Don't skip it. It's where the real learning happens.
Dance Wedowee Runs a Tighter Program
If you want something more structured, Dance Wedowee tends to run six-week sessions with a specific curriculum. They're pickier about levels, too — you can't just wander into the intermediate class because you feel ready. They'll assess you. Some people love that. Others find it annoying.
Solo dancers are welcome, but the classes lean toward partner work. If you don't have a partner, they'll pair you up. It works, mostly.
What About Wedowee Dance Academy?
You'll see it mentioned online. It's more of a general dance school that offers swing among other styles — ballet, jazz, the usual. The swing classes there are fine for fundamentals, but if swing is all you care about, the Swing Society is a better use of your time and money.
Honestly? Look Beyond Wedowee Too
Wedowee sits close enough to larger towns that expanding your search makes sense. Anniston has a swing scene. So does parts of the Talladega area. A few people who attend the Swing Society's Thursday classes drive in from those towns.
There are also occasional workshops that pop up through regional dance organizations. They're not consistent, but when they happen, they're usually worth attending.
Getting Started
Here's what I'd actually do: show up to one of the Swing Society's Thursday sessions. Wear comfortable shoes — sneakers are fine. Bring ten or fifteen bucks for the drop-in fee. Don't overthink it.
The worst that happens is you're a little lost for an hour. The best that happens is you find something that sticks.
