WATERTOWN, N.Y. — As summer 2024 gets underway, the swing dance revival in northern New York shows no signs of slowing down. From weekly socials in restored ballrooms to beginner-friendly intro specials, Watertown's dance scene offers more than nostalgia—it provides a genuine outlet for fitness, connection, and live music at a time when many residents are looking to get out of the house.
The studios below were selected based on class variety, instructor experience, and consistent student feedback from the 2023–2024 season. Each offers something distinct for different types of dancers.
The Rhythm Room
Best for: Absolute beginners and casual learners
- Location: 112 Public Square, downtown Watertown
- Standout offering: A four-week "Swing Starter" intro series
- Price: $60 for the full series; drop-ins $18
- When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.
The Rhythm Room has anchored Watertown's downtown arts corridor for over a decade. Co-founder and instructor Maria Delgado brings 15 years of East Coast Swing teaching experience, and the studio's summer 2024 schedule emphasizes low-pressure entry points. The "Swing Starter" series runs in four-week rotations through August, with no partner required. The focus here is squarely on fundamentals and social comfort—expect plenty of rotation between partners and a post-class mingling period with lemonade on the patio.
Take action: The next "Swing Starter" session begins July 9. Register at rhythmwatertown.com by July 5 to secure a spot.
Swing City Academy
Best for: Social dancers and performance-minded students
- Location: 2405 Canton Street, near Salmon Run Mall
- Standout offering: Weekly Friday night social dances with a beginner lesson included
- Price: Socials $12; group classes $20; private lessons $75/hour
- When: Classes Monday–Thursday; socials every Friday, 8:00 p.m.
If your goal is to get out on the floor quickly, Swing City Academy delivers the most active social calendar in the region. Instructors Tom and Leslie Brennan—a married couple who competed at the American Lindy Hop Championships in 2022—teach group classes in Lindy Hop, Charleston, and West Coast Swing. Their summer program also includes an eight-week performance track for students interested in troupe showcases at the Jefferson County Fair (August 10) and the Watertown Farmers Market (August 24).
Take action: New students can attend their first Friday social free in July. Check the calendar at swingcityacademy.com.
The Jitterbug Junction
Best for: Vintage atmosphere and live music devotees
- Location: 88 Sterling Street, in a restored 1940s ballroom
- Standout offering: Monthly live Big Band dance nights
- Price: Workshops $25–$45; live music nights $20 (includes open dance)
- When: Workshops select Saturdays; live music nights July 13 and August 17
Stepping into The Jitterbug Junction feels less like a class and more like a time capsule. The hardwood ballroom floor, original chandeliers, and Art Deco bar create an immersive backdrop for instruction in Lindy Hop, Balboa, and collegiate shag. Owner and instructor James "Satch" Morrison—a jazz drummer turned dance teacher—structures summer workshops around specific eras, with July focused on 1930s Harlem-style Lindy Hop and August on 1940s Hollywood smooth. The live music nights feature regional 18-piece ensembles and draw dancers from as far as Syracuse and Ottawa.
Take action: The July 13 live music night is expected to sell out. Purchase tickets at jitterbugjunction.com.
What to Know Before Your First Class
You do not need a partner to attend any of the studios above—in fact, most classes rotate partners throughout the hour. Wear smooth-soled shoes (leather or dance sneakers work best; avoid rubber-soled running shoes, which grip the floor too tightly). Bring a water bottle and arrive 10 minutes early to sign in and get oriented.
Not sure whether to choose group classes or private lessons? Group classes build social skills and are easier on the budget; private lessons accelerate technique correction and are ideal if you have a specific event—say, a wedding—you're preparing for.
Don't Miss the Summer Window
Watertown's dance studios scale back schedules after Labor Day. If you've been waiting for a reason to start, July and August offer the widest selection of classes, socials, and live events. Pick the studio that matches your pace, put on your dancing shoes, and get moving.
