On a humid Thursday evening in downtown China Grove, the sound of rapid footwork and rhythmic handclaps spills from a second-story studio on Main Street. Inside Corazón Flamenco Studio, a dozen students—ages 16 to 62—stamp out compás patterns while instructor María Elena Vásquez circles the room, calling out corrections in a rapid-fire mix of Spanish and English.
This scene would have been hard to imagine a decade ago. Yet since Baila Vermella opened its doors in 2019 and Vásquez relocated her Seville-trained company to Rowan County in 2022, China Grove—a town of roughly 4,200 people, 25 miles northeast of Charlotte—has become an improbable hub for serious Flamenco training in the Piedmont.

The town's Flamenco story began with Vásquez, who followed her husband to a manufacturing job in Kannapolis and found herself with no professional flamencos within a two-hour drive. She started teaching out of a church basement in 2017. When her beginner classes consistently drew 20-plus students from Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and the Lake Norman area, she leased the Main Street space. Two former students, Meredith Chu and Carlos Ortiz, opened Baila Vermella two years later. In March 2024, Pasión Flamenca Academy launched a pre-professional training track—the first within 50 miles of Charlotte—cementing China Grove's status as the region's de facto Flamenco capital.
"The question we get now isn't 'Why China Grove?'" says Chu. "It's 'How do I get there before class fills up?'"
The Studios: What Each Offers
Corazón Flamenco Studio
Best for: Serious students seeking authentic, intensive training
Vásquez trained at Seville's Fundación Cristina Heeren and performed six seasons with Compañía Antonio El Pipa before moving to North Carolina. Her studio replicates an Andalusian escuela structure: classes run three hours, with the first hour devoted to compás, palmas, and cante (singing) appreciation before students touch footwork. She offers five levels, from absolute beginner (iniciación) to company repertoire (cuadro flamenco).
