So You Want to Kick People While Doing a Handstand?
I'll be honest. The first time I watched a capoeira roda, I had no clue what was happening. Two people were doing some kind of slow-motion fight-dance hybrid while a room full of people sang in Portuguese and someone was playing what looked like a gourd with a stick. I stood there like an idiot for ten minutes before someone handed me a pamphlet.
That pamphlet changed my life. Or at least my Tuesday evenings.
If you're anywhere near Rockford Bay City and you've caught the itch — maybe you saw a YouTube video, maybe a friend dragged you to a demo, maybe you just think doing cartwheels in slow motion looks cool — there are a few spots worth checking out. I've poked around all of them.
Rockford Capoeira Academy
This one's on Main Street, right downtown, which matters more than you'd think. You can grab dinner before class and still make it on time. The head instructor there, I forget his apelido but he's been training for something like fifteen years, runs a tight ship but doesn't make new people feel stupid. That's harder to pull off than it sounds.
They do Monday, Wednesday, Friday evenings — six to eight. The Friday sessions tend to run long because the roda afterwards gets competitive. Nobody wants to leave. Last time I went, someone's flip-flop flew across the room and nearly took out the berimbau. Chaos. Beautiful chaos.
Kids' classes too, if you've got little ones who need to burn energy. The cultural workshops are surprisingly good — they bring in musicians, talk about the history behind the movements, that kind of thing.
Address is 123 Main Street if you want to look it up.
Bay City Capoeira Center
Over on Riverside Drive. Different vibe here. More structured, more traditional. The instructors carry International Capoeira Federation certifications, which sounds fancy but basically means they studied under legit lineage holders and didn't just learn from Instagram tutorials.
Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Saturday mornings. The Saturday class is the one I'd recommend if you're starting out — longer session, more relaxed energy, and there's usually coffee somewhere nearby for the post-class crowd.
They run private lessons too. I know a guy who did six months of privates before joining group classes because he was convinced he'd embarrass himself. He's now one of the better students. So. Maybe he was onto something.
456 Riverside Drive. They host community events every few months that are worth attending even if you don't train there.
Harmony Capoeira Studio
Smallest of the three, over on Harmony Lane. And honestly? This might be the best one for someone who's nervous about starting.
Small classes. Like, really small. Sometimes six people. The instructor there — I think her name is Ana but don't quote me — she's obsessed with music. Every class starts with instrument work. You'll learn the atabaque, the pandeiro, maybe the agogô if you're lucky. She believes you can't really do capoeira if you don't understand the music that drives it, and after watching her classes, I think she's right.
Monday and Thursday afternoons, four to six. The timing's a bit awkward if you work a nine-to-five, but the open rodas on weekends make up for it. Family-friendly too — I've seen eight-year-olds in there alongside retirees.
789 Harmony Lane.
Picking One (Without Overthinking It)
Here's what I'd actually do. Visit each one. Most places let you watch a class or do a trial. You'll know within twenty minutes which one clicks.
Pay attention to how the instructor talks to beginners. If they're patient and actually demo things slowly instead of just showing off, that's your place. Check if people hang out after class — schools where everyone bolts at 8:01 usually aren't building the kind of community that keeps you coming back.
And don't stress about the cultural stuff if it feels overwhelming at first. You'll absorb it naturally. One day you'll catch yourself humming a ladainha in the shower and realize it's too late. You're one of us now.
The berimbau's calling. Go answer it.
