Tucked into Alamance County between Burlington and Graham, this unincorporated community has become an unlikely training ground—drawing students from Raleigh, Greensboro, and Chapel Hill for classes that rival what you'd find in much larger cities.
The four studios below are not full-time conservatories. They're dedicated community hubs run by working artists, each with a distinct philosophy and student body. 1. Glen Raven Dance Academy

Glen Raven Dance Academy operates out of a converted textile warehouse with 14-foot windows and three climate-controlled studios. The building's history matters: owner-director Whitmore's grandfather worked in the mill next door, and she opened the school in 2014 after retiring from performance.
The curriculum is intentionally old-school. Students begin with Vaganova-method ballet, add contemporary in Level 3, and start pointe preparation only after passing a strength assessment administered by the staff physical therapist. That medical oversight is rare at this price point and has kept injury rates low enough that several physical therapy practices in Burlington now refer patients to the academy for post-rehab conditioning.
In 2023, three academy students received acceptances to university BFA programs, including one to Juilliard. The academy also runs an open adult beginner ballet class on Tuesday mornings that regularly fills its cap of 20 dancers.

Urban Groove Studio does not teach ballet. It does not teach jazz. What it teaches is presence, musicality, and the specific etiquette of battle culture—and it does so with a rigor that surprises first-time visitors.
Chen and Ellis opened the studio in 2019 after both relocated from Atlanta to be closer to family. Their cypher room, separated from the main studio by a glass garage door, is where most of the real learning happens. Intermediate and advanced students are expected to attend at least one monthly session where they trade rounds in front of peers. The studio also runs a youth crew, Groove Collective, that has placed in regional competitions in Charlotte and Richmond.
Adult beginners are welcome, but the culture is fast-paced. If you want a fitness-oriented hip-hop class set to radio hits, this is not your spot. If you want to learn popping fundamentals from someone who toured with Bruno Mars, it is.
3. The Movement Lab
