On a Tuesday evening in Millersburg, Ohio, a dozen teenagers file into a former hardware store on Clay Street. In the back room, converted just last year, a producer cues up drum samples while down the hall, a dance instructor runs through footwork drills. This is the new rhythm of a village of roughly 3,200 people, where waitlists for Hip Hop classes have appeared for the first time.
The growth is measured, not meteoric. A few local dancers have picked up choreography credits with regional acts touring Columbus and Cleveland. A Beat Lab student had a track place on a small streaming playlist last fall. What Millersburg lacks in national spotlight, it is starting to make up for in disciplined, community-built training. Here are three spaces shaping that talent in 2024.
Millersburg Dance Academy
Founded: 2011 | Renovation completed: Spring 2023
The Millersburg Dance Academy sits in a renovated brick building on South Washington Street. Its 2023 expansion added two studios—tripling floor space—and replaced linoleum with Marley flooring and programmable LED walls. Director Melissa Hart, who trained at Point Park University and spent six years dancing with a Pittsburgh-based contemporary company, hired two additional instructors for the 2023–24 season.
The academy's Hip Hop programming now runs six days a week, split into youth, teen, and adult tiers. Beginner classes emphasize foundational techniques—popping, locking, and basic top rock—while advanced sessions blend commercial choreography with freestyle battle preparation. Hart says enrollment in Hip Hop classes has doubled since 2019. In March 2024, three of her students competed at a regional qualifier in Akron.

- Classes: Ages 5–adult; beginner through advanced
- Pricing: $75–$140 per month, depending on weekly class frequency
"We're not trying to send everyone to L.A. We're trying to build technique strong enough that they can work regionally and decide from there," Hart said.
The Beat Lab
Founded: 2019 | Moved to current location: 2022
The Beat Lab operates out of a compact storefront on Main Street, run by founder Darius Coleman, a Millersburg native who studied audio production at Cuyahoga Community College and spent two years as an assistant engineer at a Cleveland studio before returning home. The space houses a hybrid analog-digital setup: Ableton and FL Studio stations, plus a Roland SP-404SX and a modest synthesizer collection.
Coleman offers two tracks. Group workshops, capped at six students, meet weekly and cover sampling, drum programming, and basic mixing. One-on-one mentorships run monthly and focus on finishing tracks for release. In 2023, two Beat Lab alumni placed beats with regional rappers from Youngstown and Dayton. One student, Jalen Mercer, 19, saw a track he co-produced added to a Spotify editorial playlist with roughly 12,000 followers last October.

"Most of these kids have never sat in a real studio. The goal is to demystify the process so they can work independently, whether that's here or in Columbus," Coleman said.
The Lyric Lounge
Founded: 2021 | Programming expanded: Fall 2023
The Lyric Lounge occupies the basement of a coffee shop on Jackson Street. Co-founded by poet Amina Okonkwo, a former open-mic host in Columbus who relocated to Millersburg during the pandemic, and local rapper Marcus "Marq" Jennings, the space runs weekly writing workshops and a monthly open mic. Capacity is tight—about 25 chairs—but the intimacy is deliberate.
Workshops rotate between craft exercises (metaphor, internal rhyme, narrative structure) and industry-topic nights, which have covered publishing basics, Performing Rights Organization registration, and building a regional touring network. In February 2024, Jennings helped two Lounge regulars book opening slots at a venue in Mansfield. Okonkwo says roughly 40% of current participants are under 21, with the rest split between college-age students and adults in their thirties and forties.
