Topock City's Breakdance Studios: Where to Train, What You'll Pay, and How to Choose

Topock City has exactly one traffic light and three serious breakdance studios. That ratio says everything about where local priorities lie.

For a town of its size, Topock punches above its weight in producing competitive breakers. The secret is its training infrastructure: three distinct spaces, each with its own philosophy, community, and path to progress. Whether you're a complete beginner or preparing for your first jam, here's how to pick the right fit.

1. The Spin Cycle Studio

The pitch: Structured progression for dancers who want clean technique and regular performance opportunities.

Tucked into a converted bank building on Main Street, Spin Cycle doesn't look like a typical dance studio until you descend to the basement. The 2,500-square-foot space features a fully sprung floor, wall-to-wall mirrors, and a speaker system that cost more than some local cars. What sets it apart is the curriculum: seven instructors, including two Red Bull BC One qualifiers, teach leveled courses that progress from basic toprock to advanced power move combinations.

"We don't let you touch power moves until your toprock is clean," says founder Marco Vance, a former Battle of the Year competitor. "Fundamentals first. Always."

Quick Facts

  • Address: 142 Main St., downtown Topock
  • Price: $120/month for unlimited classes; drop-ins $18
  • Ages: 8 and up (adult beginner classes Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m.)
  • Standout feature: Weekly "Battle Nights" every Thursday with live judging and cash prizes for top three
  • Best for: Dancers who want clear milestones and feedback in a polished environment

2. Topock Underground

The pitch: Scene credibility, community accountability, and zero pretension.

Housed in a 1970s warehouse two blocks from the river, Topock Underground is the only spot in town where you'll practice freezes under a 40-year-old mural painted by a Rock Steady Crew alum. The concrete floors are unforgiving. There are no mirrors. The sound system is held together with zip ties. And for many local breakers, that's exactly the point.

This is where Topock's established crew members train, battle, and recruit. The energy is collaborative but demanding. Show up soft, and you'll get pushed. Show up consistent, and you'll get adopted.

"People think it's intimidating," says regular Keesha Ortiz, 24, who started here three years ago with no prior dance experience. "But it's actually the most welcoming place once you prove you're not just passing through."

Quick Facts

  • Address: 88 Riverfront Ave.
  • Price: Pay-what-you-can suggested $10 per session; no contracts
  • Ages: All ages, though most regulars are 16–30
  • Standout feature: "Foundation Fridays" — two hours of nothing but toprock, footwork, and freezes, led by rotating crew members
  • Best for: Dancers who prioritize culture, community, and raw atmosphere over amenities

3. Airborne Academy

The pitch: Intensive, competition-focused training for dancers who want to elevate fast.

If Spin Cycle is the school and Underground is the scene, Airborne is the athlete factory. The academy specializes in power moves and aerial technique, with a floor engineered specifically for high-impact training. The space is smaller than Spin Cycle — one main room, one conditioning area — but the resume of its staff is unmatched in the region.

Airborne's "Masterclass Series" brings in pioneers and active competitors from across the global breakdance circuit. Recent guests have included B-Boy Physicx and B-Girl Logistx. Workshops are grueling, often running three to four hours, and admission is competitive.

"We're not here to make you feel good," says head coach Dmitri Volkov. "We're here to make you place at jams."

Quick Facts

  • Address: Unit 4, Topock Industrial Park (15 minutes by car from downtown; free parking lot)
  • Price: $200/month for membership; masterclasses $45–$75 each
  • Ages: 12 and up (under 16 requires parent waiver and assessment)
  • Standout feature: Monthly filmed progress reviews and personalized conditioning plans
  • Best for: Serious competitors or dancers with specific power move goals and the recovery discipline to match the intensity
