Why We Dance Outside
At 1,700 feet, Lookout Mountain cools off fast after sunset. By 8 p.m. on a Saturday in July, the air carries a breeze you won't find in any Atlanta studio. That's when we clear the pavilion floor, string the lights, and start the music.
Our summer swing workshops are built around this simple fact: some things are better done outdoors. The concrete is open-air. The ceiling is the Cumberland Plateau sky. And instead of staring at mirrors, you're facing a rotating partner while a twelve-piece band counts off the next number.
What Makes These Workshops Different
This is not a drop-in gym class with a Spotify playlist.
- Live music every night. The [Band Name] plays authentic swing, jump blues, and big-band standards. You learn to match your footwork to a breathing rhythm section, not a metronome.
- Small capacity. We cap each workshop at 40 dancers—20 couples or equivalent rotation. That gives instructors room to correct your frame, not just shout from a microphone.
- Two levels, one night. Beginners spend the first hour onEast Coast fundamentals: triple step, rock step, lead-follow connection. Intermediate dancers work on turns, styling, and musicality in a parallel session. Everyone joins the social dance floor from 9:30 to 10:30.
- Nationally recognized instructors. [Instructor Name] has placed at the International Lindy Hop Championships; [Instructor Name] teaches swing history at [University/Studio]. Both are known for making technical concepts stick without intimidation.

What to Expect Each Night
8:00–8:15 p.m. — Warm-up and partner rotation

We rotate partners regularly. No need to bring one, though couples are welcome to stay together. We also cover floorcraft and social dance etiquette—how to navigate a crowded floor, how to decline a dance gracefully, and how to recover from a collision without drama.
What to Wear
Mountain evenings can dip into the 60s even in midsummer. Dress in layers you can shed once you're moving. Shoes matter most: leather-soled or dance sneakers with minimal tread. Rubber-soled running shoes grip too hard and strain your knees on quick turns. Leave the heels at home unless they're low and well-balanced.
Join us this summer. The stars are enough light once you catch the rhythm.
