After surviving multiple bottom-three placements and delivering what judge Maksim Chmerkovskiy called "the most transformative journey of the season," contemporary dancer Anthony Curley was crowned the winner of So You Think You Can Dance Season 18 during Thursday night's live finale on Fox.
Curley, 22, from Scottsdale, Arizona, outlasted runner-up Alyssa Carr and third-place finalist Braylon Browner in a season that tested contestants with new weekly challenges, including dancing for their lives in elimination rounds and collaborating with choreographers outside their comfort zones.
How the Finale Unfolded
The two-hour finale opened with a group number choreographed by returning fan favorite Travis Wall, blending contemporary and hip-hop styles in a tribute to resilience that set the tone for the night. Guest judges Allison Holker, Fik-Shun Stegall, and Comfort Fedoke joined the regular panel to score the final solos and duets.
Curley and Carr each performed three routines: a reprise of their favorite season piece, a new duet with an all-star, and a final solo. Curley's standout moment came in his contemporary duet with all-star Robert Roldan, set to Hozier's "Unknown / Nth." The routine, choreographed by Stacey Tookey, earned a standing ovation from the studio audience and visibly moved judge JoJo Siwa to tears.
"That was the moment you became undeniable," Chmerkovskiy told Curley. "You didn't just dance it. You lived it."
Curley's Unlikely Road to Victory
Curley's win caps a season of dramatic highs and lows. He landed in the bottom three during Weeks 3 and 5, narrowly escaping elimination after dance-for-your-life solos that showcased his emotional vulnerability and technical precision. His breakthrough came in Week 6 with a Miriam Shor-choreographed jazz routine about grief, which went viral on social media and reframed him from underdog to frontrunner.
"Every time I was in danger of going home, I tried to strip everything away and just tell the truth," Curley said during his winner's interview. "This show taught me that the most powerful thing you can do onstage is be honest."
Runner-up Carr, a ballroom specialist from Miami, consistently dominated Latin and smooth waltz numbers throughout the season. Her finale tango with all-star Pasha Pashkov received the highest judges' scores of the night, but viewer votes ultimately favored Curley's narrative of redemption.
Prize Package and What's Next
Curley takes home the $100,000 grand prize and the title of "America's Favorite Dancer." Unlike earlier seasons, Season 18 did not include a recording contract in its winner's package; instead, Curley will join the upcoming So You Think You Can Dance live tour as a featured performer, with select choreography credits.
Host Cat Deeley, returning for her first full season since 2019, presented Curley with the trophy and noted his evolution from "a beautiful dancer to a true artist."
"Anthony proved that this isn't just about perfect technique," Deeley said. "It's about making people feel something they can't name."
