At 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, the overhead lights dim at Mambo Magic Academy, and the second-floor studio above Main Street Bakery fills with the clave rhythm of Cuban salsa. Couples pair off across the floor while instructor Maria Santos calls out counts over the music. Three years ago, this building was storage space. For a city of roughly 3,200 people, Millersburg has developed an unusual concentration of salsa instruction. The scene took root around 2018, when Santos—then teaching sporadically at community centers—opened the first permanent studio. Mambo Magic Academy operates with the discipline of a conservatory and the energy of a social club. Santos opened the studio in 2019 after relocating from Miami, where she performed with the Cuban National Ballet and later spent a decade teaching casino-style salsa. Salsa Soul Studio occupies a converted barn on the edge of town, and owner James Okonkwo has kept the space intentionally small. Most group classes cap at eight students. Private lessons make up roughly half the schedule, which Okonkwo says appeals to couples preparing for wedding first dances and to beginners uncomfortable with learning in crowds.

"People come in saying they have two left feet," Okonkwo said. "I tell them salsa is forgiving if you learn to listen first. We always start with music before we start with movement."
Pricing runs higher than Mambo Magic—group classes are $22 per drop-in or $110 for a six-week series, compared to Mambo Magic's $85 series rate—but the student-to-instructor ratio is the lowest in town. Drop-ins are allowed for all levels except the advanced performance prep class.
