I'm not gonna lie—when I heard Deadpool & Wolverine was showing up on DWTS this season, I had to sit with that one for a minute.
Look, I get it. Marvel is Disney now, and they're probably desperate to capitalize on whatever buzz that movie's got going. But Disney Night has always been about that specific kind of magic—the kind where your grandma's singing along in the living room and your kids are pretending the living room is Agrabah. It's wholesome. It's supposed to make you feel things. Deadpool? That guy makes people laugh by saying words you're not allowed to say on network television. That's a weird fit next to "A Whole New World."
And speaking of that song—thank god they're bringing it back. "A Whole New World" is maybe the most perfectly choreographed Disney song ever written. The whole thing is literally about flying carpets and discovering new places. You could give a beginner the easiest version of that routine and they'd still look incredible. Plus, everyone knows it. That's the secret sauce of Disney Night: songs so iconic that the audience already has feelings about them before the first step is even danced.
"Let It Go" works the same way. Yeah, it's been overdone at this point, but there's a reason. That song hits different when you're watching someone pour their whole body into it at 8pm on a Tuesday night. The emotional stakes are real.
Speaking of emotional stakes—can we talk about how stressful this must be for the contestants? Stephen and Ilona aren't wrong for saying this week is hard. You can't just learn steps; you've got to sell the whole fantasy. The dress, the story, the fantasy that you're Elsa's sister or Aladdin's new best friend. That's a lot when you're exhausted and your body is screaming.
But that's exactly why Disney Night slaps every single year. The pressure creates these moments where someone's really selling it, and suddenly you're not even thinking about the judging—you're just watching someone have the time of their life on a dance floor that looks like a Disney opening sequence.
