What Is Swing Dance?
Swing dance emerged from Harlem's Savoy Ballroom in the late 1920s, shaped by African American jazz culture and dances like the Charleston and Tap. Lindy Hop remains its most celebrated form, known for its improvisational spirit, athletic footwork, and joyful partner connection. Nearly a century later, Millersburg instructors are keeping that legacy alive—one class at a time.

Classes rotate monthly topics—basic footwork, partner connection, and classic moves like the swingout. No partner required; instructors rotate partners throughout class to build lead-follow skills.
Where to Dance
Social dancing happens the first Friday of every month at the Riverside Ballroom. Expect a welcoming mix of beginners and longtime locals, with DJ-curated swing until 11 p.m. On alternating months, the Millersburg Monarchs bring live jazz to the floor.
The atmosphere is relaxed: come as you are, dance with strangers or friends, and take breaks at the beverage table whenever you need them.
How to Start
- Wear comfortable shoes with smooth soles—sneakers work, but flat leather-soled shoes make turns easier.
- Show up solo. Most beginners do. Partner rotation is standard practice.
- Arrive ten minutes early to check in and settle in.
