Letts City's Jazz Dance Revival: A Practical Guide to the Best Studios, Classes, and What's Driving the Comeback

The Resurgence Is Real—Here's the Evidence

Letts City is in the midst of a genuine jazz dance revival, and the numbers back it up. In September 2023, the Letts City Arts Council reported a 40% year-over-year increase in jazz dance enrollment across its member studios. The tipping point, many locals say, was Syncopated Streets, a three-night showcase at the Meridian Theater that sold out its run and introduced audiences to six homegrown companies fusing classic jazz vocabularies with contemporary street forms.

"For years, people here treated jazz dance like the appetizer before ballet or the warm-up for hip-hop," says Marisol Vega, artistic director of the Letts City Dance Collective and a former Broadway chorus dancer. "Now they're seeing it as a main course. There's history in this form, and our students are hungry for it."

That hunger has translated into real infrastructure. Since 2022, three dedicated jazz studios have opened in the metro area, and two legacy spaces—the Ellington Building's Harlem Nights Dance Academy and the River District's Rhythm Room—have expanded their class offerings and performance calendars. The revival isn't confined to professionals, either. Drop-in adult enrollment has surged, driven partly by dancers in their thirties and forties returning to training after pandemic-era hiatuses.

Where to Train: Four Studios, Four Distinct Approaches

Not all jazz dance training is the same. Below, four Letts City studios broken down by what they actually specialize in, who teaches there, and what you'll pay.

The Rhythm Room

River District | Founded 2019

The Rhythm Room operates out of a converted textile warehouse with two Marley-floored studios, full-length mirrors, and—unusual for the city—live piano accompaniment for all advanced classes. The curriculum leans theatrical: expect Fosse influences, Broadway-style turns, and across-the-floor combinations set to show tunes and big-band arrangements.

  • Notable instructor: Derek Choi, former associate choreographer for the Chicago national tour, teaches the advanced musical theater jazz intensive on Tuesday evenings.
  • Price: Drop-ins run $22; monthly unlimited memberships are $180.
  • Best for: Dancers with some prior training who want a polished, performance-ready technique.
  • Caveat: Parking in the River District is metered until 9 p.m., and the lot fills quickly on weeknights.

Harlem Nights Dance Academy

Downtown, Ellington Building | Founded 2008

Harlem Nights is the most traditionally rigorous option in Letts City. The academy anchors its curriculum in African American dance history—Dunham technique, vernacular jazz, and early modern forms—while maintaining a pre-professional track that feeds dancers into regional companies and BFA programs.

  • Notable policy: All students aiming for the pre-professional track must complete a placement class; the academy runs these on the first Saturday of each month.
  • Signature event: The annual spring revue at the Letts City Playhouse, which in 2024 will feature original works by three student choreographers.
  • Price: Semester tuition starts at $520 for two classes per week; financial aid is available.
  • Best for: Serious students, teenagers preparing for college auditions, and anyone seeking deep historical context.

The Swing Shift

Linden Avenue | Founded 2021

The Swing Shift is deliberately informal. Its single studio is decorated with 1940s travel posters, a working jukebox, and a scuffed wooden floor that instructors refuse to replace because "it sounds right." The focus here is social dance: Lindy Hop, Charleston, and solo jazz movement rooted in the Savoy Ballroom tradition.

  • Notable class: Lindy 101 is explicitly advertised as partner-friendly for solo walk-ins—the studio rotates partners every few minutes, so no one needs to bring their own.
  • Price: $15 drop-ins; five-class cards are $65.
  • Best for: Absolute beginners, nervous adults, and anyone who wants to socialize while sweating.
  • Bonus: Free underground lot parking for evening classes.

Groove Central

Westside Commons | Founded 2020

Groove Central sits at the intersection of jazz funk, commercial hip-hop, and street jazz. The clientele skews young—many classes are packed with teenagers and college students—but the studio has begun adding adult-specific sections after 8 p.m. due to demand.

  • Notable instructor: Bree Okonkwo, whose choreography credits include two regional music festivals, teaches the
