Learn to Swing Dance in Downtown Austin with Mobile Swing

Want a workout that doesn't feel like one? Mobile Swing's twice-monthly Lindy Hop and East Coast Swing lessons bring together absolute beginners and experienced dancers for two hours of movement, music, and connection.

When and Where

Classes meet on the first and third Saturday of every month, 7:00–9:00 p.m., at the Rotunda Community Center, 452 Maple Street in Downtown Austin. The venue offers free on-site parking and is fully accessible by bus and light rail.

Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Come early to warm up and meet your classmates.

What to Expect

Each session breaks down into two parts:

  • 7:00–8:00 p.m.: Fundamentals — footwork, partner connection, and lead-follow basics
  • 8:00–9:00 p.m.: Social dancing with guided practice to live-DJ'd swing and jazz

Instructor Jamie Ortiz, who has taught swing for 12 years, leads all beginner-friendly sessions. Ortiz specializes in helping self-described "two-left-feet" dancers find their rhythm, so no partner or prior experience is required.

Mobile Swing rotates partners during class to build lead-follow skills across the room.

Why Swing Dance?

Swing dancing delivers real benefits without the treadmill monotony:

  • Physical: Improve cardio, balance, and coordination in a single evening
  • Mental: Memorize patterns, respond to musical changes, and stay present
  • Social: Meet people face-to-face in a low-pressure, alcohol-free environment

Who It's For

Mobile Swing welcomes solo dancers, couples, and friend groups. Ages 18 and up. Masks are optional; the space is ventilated and cleaned between events.

How to Register

Spots are limited to 30 dancers per class.
