Irish Dance Schools in Wadsworth, Texas: A Parent and Student Guide to Classes, Costs, and Finding the Right Fit

Note: This guide covers Irish dance instruction in Wadsworth, an unincorporated community in Matagorda County, Texas, and the surrounding area.

Irish dance has found an unlikely but devoted following along the Texas Gulf Coast. In and around Wadsworth—a small, unincorporated farming community roughly 15 miles northeast of Bay City—four independent studios now offer structured instruction in jigs, reels, and hornpipes. For parents and adult beginners trying to choose between them, the options can be difficult to compare.

This guide is based on direct interviews with studio directors, in-person visits to three of the four locations, and a review of regional competition results from An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (CLRG) and the Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America (IDTANA). Each listing includes the practical details we wished we had found in one place: addresses, age ranges, pricing models, and what genuinely distinguishes one school from another.

What to Know Before You Enroll

Irish dance schools operate under a certification system. Teachers who have passed CLRG examinations may enter students in feiseanna (regional competitions) and the annual Oireachtas championships. Not every studio pursues this track. Some emphasize performance, fitness, or cultural preservation instead.

Most Gulf Coast studios follow the academic calendar, with registration opening in August and a recital or feis in late spring. Trial classes are common but not universal. Ask specifically whether the trial fee can be applied to first-month tuition.

Celtic Spirit Dance Academy

Address: 4120 FM 521, Wadsworth, TX 77483
Founded: 2008
Director: Aisling Byrne, TCRG (certified 2006; former Riverdance touring member, 1999–2003)
Ages: 4 through adult
Class types: Beginner, intermediate, advanced, adult recreational, ceili team, solo competition
Pricing: $85–$125/month depending on weekly class frequency; competition and costume fees additional
Notable distinction: Strongest competitive record in the region

Byrne opened Celtic Spirit in a converted cotton-gin office after retiring from touring. The studio now occupies a 2,400-square-foot space with a sprung floor and a small archive of Riverdance production photos donated by Byrne.

Celtic Spirit is the only school within a 50-mile radius of Wadsworth that regularly sends dancers to the Southern Region Oireachtas. In 2023, seven of its 34 enrolled students qualified. Competition is not mandatory, however; roughly 40 percent of students attend class purely for recreation and fitness.

"We have grandparents dancing alongside their grandchildren on Thursday nights," Byrne said. "But if a child wants to chase a world medal, we have the structure for that, too."

Trial policy: One free trial class; new beginner sessions start the first week of each month.

Emerald Isle Dance Studio

Address: 1802 Avenue F, Bay City, TX 77414 (18 miles southwest of Wadsworth)
Founded: 2015
Directors: Colm and Niamh O'Donnell (both TCRG certified; relocated from Dublin in 2014)
Ages: 3 through adult
Class types: Traditional Irish step dance, contemporary Irish fusion, adult sean-nós, summer intensive
Pricing: $75/month for one weekly class; $110/month for unlimited classes; sibling discounts available
Notable distinction: Only studio in the area teaching sean-nós (old-style) Irish dance

The O'Donnells renovated a former ballet studio in downtown Bay City in 2021, installing a sprung maple floor, wall-to-wall mirrors, and a sound-dampening ceiling. The space is bright and modern, but the curriculum leans heavily on tradition. Niamh O'Donnell teaches sean-nós, a looser, improvisational style rarely offered outside Ireland and a few major U.S. cities.

Emerald Isle does not emphasize solo competition. Instead, students perform at regional festivals—the Houston Irish Festival, the Texas Celtic Music Festival in Kerrville—and participate in a studio-produced showcase each March.

"Sean-nós is about listening to the music and letting your body respond," Niamh O'Donnell said. "It's a completely different path from the highly stylized step dance most people picture."

Trial policy: $15 trial class; fee waived if the student enrolls within two weeks.
