Irish Dance Comes to Okemah: Six-Week Workshop Series Starts May 18

Welcome to the rhythmic heartbeat of Irish culture in the heart of Okemah! As we step into the future, we also honor the rich traditions that have shaped our past. This May, the Okemah Cultural Center is bringing the spirit of the Emerald Isle straight to your doorstep with a six-week Irish dance workshop series led by a performer who has lived it on stages across two continents.

Why Irish Dance?

Irish dance is more than intricate footwork set to lively music. It is a living expression of history, folklore, and community—one that has captivated audiences from Dublin to Broadway. Now it is Okemah's turn to experience that magic firsthand, whether you come with Irish roots or simply curiosity and a pair of willing feet.

Meet Your Instructor: Caitlin O'Reilly

Caitlin O'Reilly has toured with Riverdance across Europe and North America, and her choreography earned top honors at the 2022 Oireachtas National Championship. She brings years of professional stage experience and a genuine passion for introducing newcomers to the joy of Irish dance.

"The best part is watching someone realize they can do it—the moment the steps click and the music takes over," O'Reilly says. "That happens in every single class."

For Every Skill Level

These sessions welcome everyone from absolute beginners to dancers looking to polish their technique. Over six weeks, you will learn traditional Irish dance steps, explore the cultural stories behind the movements, and prepare for an end-of-series showcase. No prior dance experience is necessary—just a willingness to learn and have fun.

So lace up your ghillies (the soft leather shoes worn in Irish dance) and get ready to step into a tradition built by generations and kept alive by the dancers who step into it each week.

A Community on Its Feet

These workshops are about more than mastering steps. They are about building a community that celebrates diversity and cultural exchange. Whether you trace your family line back to County Cork or you have never heard a reel in your life, you will find a warm welcome here.

How to Register

Registration opens April 15. The last three workshop series at the Okemah Cultural Center sold out within ten days, so early sign-up is strongly encouraged.

Your $120 registration fee covers all workshop materials and grants you access to the final performance. Spaces are capped at 15 participants per session to ensure personalized instruction.

Six Saturdays. One unforgettable showcase. A tradition that begins the moment you take your first step.
