On a Saturday afternoon in Parkway City, the sprung floors at Rize & Shine Studio absorb the impact of footwork that looks almost combative—arms flailing, chests popping, faces contorted with effort. This is Krump, the street dance born in South Los Angeles more than 20 years ago, and it is finding new footing in an unlikely locale.

Three studios opened in Parkway City within the past 18 months, each wagering that the dance form still has room to evolve—and that this neighborhood can become a meaningful hub for its next generation.

From South L.A. to Parkway City

Krump emerged in the early 2000s as an outlet for emotional intensity in underserved Los Angeles communities. Characterized by aggressive, explosive movements—stomps, jabs, chest pops, and arm swings—it spread through documentaries like Rize (2005) and global battle competitions. Though now established in major cities worldwide, dedicated Krump studios remain rare. Most dancers still train in multipurpose community centers or hip-hop spaces.

Parkway City's cluster of specialized studios represents a deliberate, localized bet on the form's longevity.

Three Studios, Three Approaches

Rize & Shine Studio

Opened: November 2023
Location: 1400 North Mercer Street, Parkway City
Founder/Lead Instructor: Tyrone "T-Rex" Edwards (professional name), 34,former champion of the 2017 West Coast Krump Championships

Edwards, who danced under Krump originator Tight Eyez in Los Angeles before relocating, designed the 3,200-square-foot space around acoustic performance. The studio features a D&B Audiotechnik sound system and a floor built with Robbins Bio-Channel Maple—materials more commonly found in professional concert venues than neighborhood dance spaces.

"I wanted dancers to feel what I felt in L.A.," Edwards said. "The sound has to hit your chest before your feet move. That's Krump."

Classes run six days a week, with advanced sessions on Thursdays and a monthly "Rumble Night" open battle (next event: June 8).

Heartbeat House

Opened: March 2024
Location: 892 Eastway Drive, Parkway City
Founders: Sisters Dana and Keisha Morrison

The Morrisons converted a former church fellowship hall into a studio that doubles as a community programming space. Beyond dance classes, Heartbeat House offers free mental health counseling for teenage members through a partnership with Parkway Family Services and hosts quarterly academic tutoring nights.

"Our dancers can't grow if everything outside these walls is falling apart," Keisha Morrison said. "We're building people first, performers second."

Heartbeat House will host its first city-wide youth Krump competition on July 20, with registration opening June 1.

Kings & Queens Dance Academy

Opened: August 2023
Location: 45 Royal Boulevard, Parkway City
Director: Marcus Chen, 29, former dance ethnography graduate student at State University

Chen designed the academy's 12-week curriculum to pair technique with historical context. Each cohort spends two classroom sessions per month examining Krump's origins, including oral histories from L.A. founders, footage from the 2004 Battle Zone competitions, and scholarly analysis from historian加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加加加教师加
