In a converted church sanctuary on Cleveland's Coventry Road, fifteen young dancers execute grand jetés across sprung maple floors installed by the same company that built New York's Lincoln Center studios. Morning light filters through original stained-glass windows as a former American Ballet Theatre soloist calls out corrections in French. This is Cleveland Heights City Ballet (CHCB), where artistic director Margaret Donovan has trained more than 400 students since founding the school in 1987.
History and Mission
CHCB began as a community outreach program with twelve students in a borrowed parish hall. Today it operates as a nonprofit academy with 180 enrolled dancers, maintaining its original mission of providing rigorous classical training regardless of family income. The school holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Dance and maintains partnerships with BalletMet Columbus and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre for student exchanges.
Unlike regional competitors such as Cleveland School of Dance (contemporary-focused) or Ohio Ballet Theatre School (youth-company model), CHCB emphasizes the Vaganova method with integrated character dance and music theory. This Russian-derived curriculum produces graduates who have secured positions with Cincinnati Ballet, Louisville Ballet, and regional companies across the Midwest.
Training Programs
The academy structures progression through four distinct tracks:
Pre-Ballet (Ages 4–7) Twice-weekly classes emphasize musicality, coordination, and classroom etiquette rather than premature technical demands. Creative movement exercises prepare young bodies for formal study without the injury risks of early pointe preparation.
Ballet Technique (Ages 8–16) Students advance through eight levels based on twice-yearly assessments. Level 4+ requires four weekly classes including supplementary conditioning and pre-pointe. The typical progression spans six to eight years to Level 8.
Pointe and Variations (Invitation Only) Advanced students attend six weekly hours including pas de deux, character, and repertoire classes. Level 8 dancers rehearse classical variations for the annual YAGP regional competition and school showcases.
Adult Open Division Evening and weekend classes accommodate working professionals, with separate tracks for absolute beginners and those returning after hiatus. No performance requirement; enrollment by 10-class card or unlimited monthly membership.
Faculty and Training Environment
The seven-member teaching staff combines professional performance backgrounds with pedagogical credentials. Ballet master James Chen danced twelve seasons with Boston Ballet, including soloist roles in Swan Lake and Romeo and Juliet. Children's division coordinator Elena Volkov holds certification from the Vaganova Academy and an MFA in dance education from Temple University.
The facility comprises three studios: the 2,400-square-foot sanctuary studio with Harlequin Cascade flooring and theatrical lighting; Studio B with mirrors on three walls for detailed correction work; and a conditioning room equipped with Pilates apparatus and floor barres. All spaces maintain climate control between 68–72°F to prevent muscle strain.
Performance and Professional Development
Students perform in two full productions annually: a December Nutcracker at the Mimi Ohio Theatre (capacity 1,000) and a spring repertory concert featuring works by faculty and guest choreographers. Advanced students may audition for the CHCB Trainee Program, a tuition-free intensive for post-high school dancers preparing company auditions.
Recent graduate outcomes include three dancers joining Louisville Ballet II, two accepted to Indiana University's ballet program, and one apprentice contract with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. The school maintains a 94% retention rate for students entering Level 4 and above.
Visiting and Enrollment
Prospective families may observe any class during the first two weeks of each semester. New students ages 8+ require a placement class ($25 fee credited toward tuition). The academy operates on a semester calendar with registration opening August 1 and January 2.
Tuition ranges from $1,200 annually for Pre-Ballet to $4,800 for Level 8, with need-based scholarships covering up to 75% of costs for qualifying families. Adult class cards cost $180 for ten sessions.
