Classes include improvisation exercises that have nothing to do with competition choreography and everything to do with learning to dance from the inside out.

Green Fields is the only studio in Callaway City that teaches a full traditional sean-nós curriculum alongside contemporary competition choreography in the same class session.

It shouldn't work. But instructor Ronan Kelleher—who trained in Galway under a teacher who trained under someone who learned from a man who danced at wakes—has figured out a way to make it feel natural rather than contradictory.

"Traditional and modern aren't fighting," Kelleher says. "They're having a conversation. The goal is to hear both voices."

The annual showcase at Green Fields is something else. It's part recital, part history lesson, part family reunion. Audience members often can't tell which pieces are traditional and which are original choreography, and Kelleher considers that a win.

Students leave Green Fields with a vocabulary that most competition-focused programs don't provide. They understand where the steps came from, and they have opinions about where they might go next.
