Dancing Gemini Set for Group 1 Bow in Coral-Eclipse After Derby Sixth

Dancing Gemini, the fast-finishing sixth in the Epsom Derby, is poised to make his Group 1 debut in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on July 3, trainer Ralph Beckett has confirmed.

The three-year-old Frankel colt stamped himself a smart prospect with a strong late run at Epsom before going one better in the Listed Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket's July meeting, where he quickened decisively under Hector Crouch to score by three-quarters of a length. That performance, over an extended mile and a quarter, suggested the step up to 10 furlongs will suit — though the Eclipse will demand a sharper tactical test against seasoned older horses and elite three-year-olds.

Beckett believes the colt is physically progressive and ready for the jump in class. "He's a very talented horse and we think he can make a big impression," the trainer said. "The Derby form is working out well, and what he showed at Newmarket was the confirmation we needed that he's on an upward curve."

The Coral-Eclipse, Britain's premier midsummer 10-furlong contest, is expected to draw a high-quality field. Aidan O'Brien's dual Derby winner Auguste Rodin and the reopposing Epsom runner-up Liberty Lane are among those under consideration, while Dancing Gemini will also likely face older rivals with proven Group 1 credentials. The son of Frankel has shown a strong turn of foot in his two starts this season, but he will need to translate that speed into a more robust early pace scenario.

Should Beckett feel the Eclipse comes too soon, the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood on July 27 remains a fallback option. The seven-furlong Group 2 would represent a different test entirely, though it would keep the colt at a competitive level through the summer.

Dancing Gemini is owned by Amanda Skiffington and Jonathan Harvey's Gemini Stud, for whom the colt has already delivered a first Pattern-race success. A big run at Sandown would underline his value as a stallion prospect for the fledgling operation.
