May 10–12, 2024 | Okemah Civic Center | Three days of intensive workshops culminating in a Saturday evening showcase
Okemah has long been a crossroads of culture—birthplace of Woody Guthrie, home to powwow grounds and folk festivals, a town where Oklahoma's Native American heritage sits shoulder-to-shoulder with American roots music. This May, that same collision of tradition and innovation moves onto the dance floor.
Fusion in Motion brings three days of contemporary dance workshops to the Okemah Civic Center, designed for dancers who want technical rigor without sacrificing creative risk. Whether you're a pre-professional dancer building your repertoire or a curious adult returning to movement after years away, the schedule is built to stretch you in both body and perspective.
What You'll Do
Cultural Fusion: Oklahoma Meets Berlin, NYC, and Beyond
You'll learn how powwow dance footwork can restructure a contemporary phrase, and how European release technique changes when paired with live Oklahoma bluegrass. These sessions are built on actual movement exchange—not abstract ideals of unity, but physical practice rooted in specific traditions.
Improvisation and Choreography: From Instinct to Structure
Morning sessions train you to trust spontaneous physical response to music and environment. Afternoons take those raw movements and shape them into coherent phrase work. By day three, you'll have material ready for the stage.
Body Awareness and Conditioning: Dance Longer, Dance Safer
Led by an athletic trainer who works with the Tulsa Ballet, conditioning classes target the hamstrings, hip flexors, and rotator cuffs most vulnerable in contemporary training. Expect strength work, flexibility drills, and injury-prevention strategies you can take back to your regular practice.
Performance: You'll Close the Festival
Saturday evening, May 12, you'll perform the work you've built alongside your instructors and fellow participants. The showcase is open to the public—family, friends, and the Okemah community.
