Cha Cha for Charity Raises $18,500 for St. Cloud Food Pantry

By 9 p.m. Saturday, the Riverside Ballroom's parquet floor was packed with more than 200 dancers cha-cha-ing in unison—all to keep the St. Cloud Community Food Pantry stocked through winter.

The "Cha Cha for Charity" event, organized by WJON News, transformed the 1920s-era venue into a six-hour fundraising marathon that drew teenagers, retirees, and everyone in between.

From First Steps to Full Dance Floor

The evening began with back-to-back lessons led by three instructors from St. Cloud Dance Academy, including 2019 Midwest Ballroom finalist Elena Voss. Within an hour, self-described beginners were attempting cross-body leads and Cuban breaks alongside seasoned dancers.

"I haven't danced since my wedding 40 years ago," said Margaret Chen, 67, of St. Cloud. "But I figured if I'm going to make a fool of myself, it might as well be for a good cause."

By 10 p.m., the formal lesson structure had dissolved into open dancing, with a live band playing salsa and cha cha standards until midnight.

Star Power and Silent Bids

The night's standout moment came from Maria Delgado, a three-time U.S. Cha Cha champion, who performed a blistering routine that drew a sustained standing ovation. Delgado, who donated her appearance fee to the pantry, stuck around afterward to pose for photos and offer impromptu pointers to attendees.

Meanwhile, a silent auction of 34 items—including weekend getaways at Grand View Lodge, private dance lessons, and original artwork by local painters—generated competitive bidding that extended past its scheduled 11 p.m. close.

The Bottom Line

Pantry director James Okonkwo took the stage just after midnight to announce the final tally: $18,500 raised, surpassing the event's $15,000 goal. The funds will cover approximately three months of expanded winter operations, including evening and weekend food distributions that Okonkwo says have seen demand spike 34% since last year.

"Three months doesn't sound like forever," Okonkwo told the crowd. "But for the families who come to us after work, after their kids are asleep, wondering how they'll eat tomorrow—this means everything."

What's Next

WJON News will post a full photo gallery from the event on its Facebook page Monday morning. Organizers say a second "Cha Cha for Charity" is already being discussed for fall 2025.
