East Richmond Heights sits on the eastern edge of Richmond, California, a small unincorporated community in Contra Costa County with working-class roots and growing cultural diversity. Tucked between the Richmond hills and El Cerrito, the neighborhood has become an unlikely pocket for Afro-Brazilian martial arts. Over the past two decades, three Capoeira schools have established regular classes here, drawing students from across the East Bay who want training without the commute to Oakland or Berkeley.
Capoeira itself emerged in Brazil during the colonial period, developed by enslaved Africans who disguised combat training as dance. The art combines kicks, acrobatics, evasive movements, and live music played on instruments like the berimbau, atabaque, and pandeiro. A complete practice includes physical conditioning, partner work, and participation in the roda—the circle where two practitioners play together while musicians sing and set the tempo.
If you are new to Capoeira, most schools welcome beginners with no prior experience. Wear comfortable athletic clothing you can move in, bring water, and expect to train barefoot on a clean studio floor. A typical class runs 60 to 90 minutes and includes a warm-up, movement drills, partner sequences, music instruction, and a short roda. Do not worry about perfect technique on day one; focus on learning the basic ginga rhythm and responding to the music.
Below is what we found at each of the three Capoeira schools operating in East Richmond Heights. Details reflect publicly available information and direct outreach as of early 2025. We recommend confirming schedules and pricing before visiting, as both can change.
