A Real Studio in an Unlikely Place
Lapoint isn't a city. It's a small community in Utah's Uintah Basin, population under 100, with more dirt roads than streetlights. But inside a converted warehouse just off State Route 121, some of the region's most dedicated breakdancers are training on sprung maple flooring with Marley overlay—the same surface used at Red Bull BC One qualifiers.
This is where [Studio Name] operates. No neon signs. No hype. Just hours of drills, failed freezes, and the occasional clean windmill.
Who Runs It
The program is led by Marcus Chen, a former competitor with the Midwest crew Ground Control who placed top-eight at Battle of the Year USA in 2017. After moving to Utah for work, Chen started teaching out of a friend's garage in 2019. By 2022, he had enough students to lease the warehouse space. He now runs classes with two additional instructors: Tasha Okonkwo, a freestyle specialist who judges local battles in Salt Lake City and Denver, and Derek Vance, whose focus is power move conditioning and injury prevention.
Who It's For
Classes are split into three clear tracks:
- Foundations (ages 7–12): Toprock, basic footwork, and safe falling technique. No prior dance experience required.
- Youth Development (ages 13–17): Power move prep, freeze transitions, and introductory battle etiquette.
- Open Session (18+): Freestyle labs, cypher training, and competition conditioning for adults training at any level.
What You'll Actually Do
Each 90-minute session follows a set structure: warm-up and mobility, 30 minutes of drilled sequences, 20 minutes of open practice with instructor feedback, and a final cypher or mock battle. You won't leave with vague inspiration. You'll leave with one new sequence drilled into muscle memory.
The curriculum covers:
- Footwork: Basic six-step variations through advanced threading and flow concepts
- Power and freezes: Windmills, flares, airflares, and elbow-dependent freeze combinations
- Battle skills: Round construction, reading opponents, and managing adrenaline in cyphers
- Culture and history: Hip-hop's foundational principles and breakdance's evolution from the Bronx to Olympic sport
Proof in Motion
In 2023, three of Chen's students placed at the Utah State Breaking Championships in Provo. Two others have gone on to compete at USA Dance regional qualifiers. More importantly, several Foundation-track students who started with no rhythm and two left feet are now entering local all-ages cyphers without hesitation.
