Belly Dance in McFarland, CA: A Guide to the City's Three Independent Studios

McFarland, California—a city of roughly 15,000 in the San Joaquin Valley—is better known for agriculture and its 1987 cross-country legacy than for arts programming. Yet over the past decade, three independent belly dance studios have established an unexpectedly tight-knit community here, drawing students from Delano, Wasco, and Bakersfield for classes in Egyptian raqs sharqi, tribal fusion, and movement-based wellness.

We visited each studio, interviewed instructors, and attended beginner sessions to compare teaching styles, costs, and what first-timers can realistically expect.

What to Know Before Your First Class

Belly dance is low-impact and adaptable to most fitness levels, but studio cultures vary. Some emphasize choreography and performance; others treat classes as moving meditation. Most beginner sessions require bare feet or dance socks, comfortable fitted clothing (a hip scarf helps but is rarely mandatory), and no prior dance experience. Two of the three McFarland studios hold student showcases annually; the third does not stage performances at all.

The Enchanting Steps Studio

Address: 1747 Sherwood Avenue, McFarland, CA 93250
Founded: 2014
Owner/Instructor: Delia Rostami
Contact: (661) 555-0142 | enchantingstepsmcfarland.com | @enchantingstepsmcfarland

What to Expect

Rostami, who trained for six years in Cairo and Istanbul before relocating to Kern County, teaches Egyptian-style raqs sharqi in a converted barn with wall-to-wall mirrors and sprung-wood flooring. Classes run Tuesday through Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Beginner sessions (Level 1) focus on posture, hip articulations, and basic traveling steps; intermediate and advanced students work on improvisation, finger cymbals (zills), and choreography drawn from Rostami's field research.

Cost and Logistics

  • Drop-in class: $18
  • 8-class card: $120 (valid for 10 weeks)
  • Private lessons: $75/hour

Parking is available in a gravel lot behind the building. Rostami offers a free 30-minute orientation for absolute beginners on the first Saturday of each month.

Instructor's Perspective

"I don't teach 'belly dance' as a fitness trend," Rostami said. "If you stay for two years, you'll know the difference between Saidi and Baladi, and you'll understand why the movements matter culturally."

Rhythmic Essence

Address: 214 West Perkins Avenue, McFarland, CA 93250 (Perkins Plaza, Suite C)
Founded: 2018
Directors: Marcus and Yuki Tanaka
Contact: (661) 555-0298 | rhythmcinessence.com | @rhythmicescence

What to Expect

The Tanakas—Marcus, a former contemporary dancer, and Yuki, who studied ATS (American Tribal Style) in San Francisco—built Rhythmic Essence around fusion work. Their curriculum layers traditional belly dance isolations over electronic, hip-hop, and industrial soundscapes. The 1,200-square-foot studio is black-box minimal: no mirrors, dimmable lights, and a PA system that gets regular use.

Classes are divided by approach rather than strict level. "Foundation" covers isolations and musicality; "Fusion Lab" experiments with prop work (fans, LED hoops, veils) and collaborative choreography. The Tanakas host four to six guest workshops yearly. Recent instructors include Seattle-based tribal fusion artist Zoe Jakes (March 2024) and Los Angeles choreographer Jill Parker (October 2023).

Cost and Logistics

  • Drop-in class: $20
  • Monthly unlimited: $150
  • Guest workshops: $45–$85 depending on duration

Street parking fills quickly on weekday evenings; arrive 10 minutes early. First-timers can take any Foundation class, though the Tanakas recommend the Wednesday 6:30 p.m. slot as the most beginner-friendly.

Instructor's Perspective

"We get a lot of students who tried traditional classes and felt constrained," Yuki Tanaka said. "We tell them: learn the rules first, then break them deliberately."
