In the unincorporated community of Amboy, Minnesota—population roughly 500—ballet barres line the walls of a converted grain-elevator office, and local children practice pliés where farmers once weighed soybean harvests. This is not the setting most people imagine for classical dance training. Yet over the past decade, Amboy and the surrounding Cottonwood County area have developed a small but dedicated ballet community, one that draws families from nearby towns such as Windom, Mountain Lake, and Storden.
Why Amboy?
The town's dance presence traces back to 2014, when former Minnesota Dance Theatre soloist Jane Anderson relocated to the area with her husband, a Windom native. What began as weekend classes in a borrowed church basement has since grown into River Valley Ballet, a studio that now serves approximately 80 students across multiple locations.
"I wanted to keep teaching after I retired from performing, and we were looking for somewhere affordable to land," Anderson said. "I assumed I'd have maybe ten students. I did not expect to turn away enrollment."
Anderson's arrival coincided with broader regional investment in rural arts access. In 2017, the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council awarded a $12,000 grant to support dance programming in Cottonwood and Jackson counties, helping subsidize tuition and transportation for families traveling from as far as 40 minutes away.
The Studios
Amboy itself hosts one physical studio space, with two additional programs operating satellite classes in the broader region. Each serves a distinct niche.
River Valley Ballet
Location: 302 Main Street, Amboy (second floor, former Farmers Union building) Specialty: Pre-professional foundation and adult beginner re-entry
Anderson's flagship operation offers a Russian-influenced Vaganova curriculum for ages 4 through 18, with a separate "Second Act" track for adults who danced as children and want to return. Classes run Tuesday and Thursday evenings, plus Saturday mornings. Annual tuition ranges from $480 for one weekly class to $1,100 for the pre-professional track, which meets four times per week and includes pointe work for qualified students.
The studio's defining feature is its performance model: rather than renting a theater, River Valley presents its annual spring showcase at the Cottonwood County Fairgrounds building. Last May, approximately 220 audience members attended—nearly matching Amboy's entire population.
Mountain Lake Dance Collective

Founded in 2019 by former Radio City Rockette Melissa Chen, this studio emphasizes performance opportunities and cross-genre training. Students compete in regional ballet and contemporary events in Minneapolis and Sioux Falls. Chen holds beginner ballet classes in Amboy specifically to reduce travel time for west-county families. Monthly tuition averages $85–$110.
Cottonwood County Community Education
Location: Windom Middle School and Storden Community Center Specialty: Low-cost introduction and adaptive dance
This public program, administered through Independent School District 750, offers six-week introductory ballet sessions for $45. In 2022, the program added an adaptive dance class for students with physical and developmental disabilities, staffed by a teaching artist trained in the National Dance Institute's inclusive methodology.
The Instructors
The area's small instructor pool reflects both the community's size and its seriousness about training.
Jane Anderson, River Valley Ballet: A 14-year veteran of Minnesota Dance Theatre, Anderson holds advanced certification in the Vaganova method. Her teaching is described by parents as "precise but patient," with particular strength in building ankle and foot stability before allowing students onto pointe.
Melissa Chen, Mountain Lake Dance Collective: Chen danced professionally for eight years before earning her MFA in dance education. She is known for high-energy choreography that blends ballet technique with jazz and musical theater styles. "These kids have as much drive as any New York student," Chen said. "They just need access."
David Okonkwo, Cottonwood County Community Education: A Nigerian-born dancer who trained at the National Ballet School of Canada, Okonkwo joined the community ed program in 2021 after relocating to rural Minnesota for his spouse's medical residency. He teaches the adaptive dance class and the adult beginner sessions.

For many local parents, the availability of ballet training in and near Amboy has eliminated a difficult choice. Windom resident Sarah Peterman drives her 9-year-old daughter, Clara, to River Valley Ballet three times weekly.
"Before Jane opened, our closest real option was Sioux Falls, which is an hour and a half each way," Peterman said. "That was not sustainable with two younger kids at home. We would have had to give up ballet entirely."
