Auburn City Ballet: Where Auburn's Dancers Find Their Foundation (and Wings)

In a sunlit studio on East Magnolia Avenue, a seven-year-old executes her first proper plié while a college student refines her fouetté turns across the floor. Both call Auburn City Ballet home.

Since 1998, we've been the Auburn community's destination for classical training that honors ballet's centuries-old traditions while nurturing each dancer's individual path—whether that leads to the professional stage or a lifelong love of movement.

Why Auburn Families Choose Us

Instructors With Professional Pedigrees Our faculty brings 75+ combined years of professional performance experience to the studio. Director Sarah Chen danced with Boston Ballet for twelve years; ballet mistress James Okonkwo performed with Dance Theatre of Harlem and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. They don't just teach technique—they mentor dancers, drawing from careers spent on world stages.

Studios Built for Bodies in Motion Three climate-controlled studios feature sprung Harlequin floors that protect growing joints, professional Marley surfaces for optimal traction, and floor-to-ceiling mirrors on two walls for comprehensive line correction. Natural light floods through north-facing windows; professional sound systems deliver crisp musicality training.

A Clear Path for Every Ambition From first steps to pre-professional intensity, our tiered curriculum meets dancers where they are and challenges them to grow. Annual assessments ensure appropriate placement; private coaching supplements group instruction for those seeking accelerated development.

Performance Experience That Builds Confidence Our students don't just train—they perform. The annual Nutcracker production at the Gogue Performing Arts Center draws 2,000+ attendees. Spring showcases at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center feature original choreography. Select students compete at Youth America Grand Prix and the American Dance Competition, with three national finalists in the past five years.

Our Programs

Beginning Ballet (Ages 5–8) Young dancers discover ballet's building blocks—posture, coordination, and musicality—through imaginative exercises that make technique feel like play. Classes meet twice weekly for 45 minutes. No prior experience required; complimentary placement class ensures appropriate level.

Elementary & Intermediate Ballet (Ages 9–13) As bodies and attention spans mature, training intensifies. Students master foundational vocabulary, develop strength and flexibility through targeted conditioning, and begin pre-pointe preparation. Multiple levels allow progression at individual rates.

Advanced Ballet (Ages 14–18) Rigorous technique classes, pointe work, variations study, and pas de deux training prepare serious students for collegiate and professional auditions. Rehearsals for mainstage productions develop stamina and artistry under performance pressure.

Adult Ballet Whether you're returning after years away or lacing up slippers for the first time, our adult program offers leveled classes in a supportive, non-competitive atmosphere. Morning and evening sessions accommodate working schedules. No tights required—comfortable athletic wear welcome.

Pre-Professional Intensive By audition only, this comprehensive program provides 20+ hours weekly of training for students committed to pursuing dance careers. College audition preparation, company repertoire study, and individualized mentorship distinguish our graduates, who have secured positions with Nashville Ballet II, Charlotte Ballet, and prestigious university dance programs.

Beyond Technique: Our Community

Auburn City Ballet functions as extended family. Parents connect in observation areas and volunteer for production committees. Alumni return to teach, choreograph, and cheer current students. We partner with Auburn University's Department of Theatre and Dance for masterclasses and scholarship opportunities.

Our outreach programs bring ballet to underserved schools throughout Lee County, because we believe every child deserves access to quality arts education.
