Why Square Dancing?

In our fast-paced digital world, genuine connection is more valuable than ever. Square dancing isn't just a nostalgic pastime—it's a vibrant, living tradition that brings people together in laughter, movement, and community. At Lake Holiday, we've discovered that there's something magical about joining hands with neighbors, following a caller's rhythm, and creating something joyful together.

Whether you're a complete beginner or haven't do-si-do'd since grade school, our classes offer a warm welcome to everyone. You don't need experience, a partner, or fancy footwear—just a willingness to try something new and connect with your community.

Our Classes

Beginner Basics

Perfect for first-timers! This eight-week series covers all the foundational moves from promenade to allemande left. You'll learn terminology, basic patterns, and enough combinations to join any mainstream square dance. Our patient instructors break down each step in a supportive, no-pressure environment.

Improver Circle

Already know your do-si-do from your swing thru? Our intermediate class builds on the basics with more complex patterns and faster calls. This ongoing class focuses on fluency, technique, and having fun with more challenging material.

Family Dance Nights

Once a month, we host a community dance where all generations come together. Kids, parents, and grandparents can all share the dance floor for a night of multigenerational fun. These events feature a mix of simple dances for beginners and more complex ones for experienced dancers.

What to Expect

Walking into your first square dance class can feel intimidating, but within minutes, you'll realize you've found something special. Here's what a typical class looks like:

We begin with a warm welcome and introductions—many of our dancers were complete beginners just like you! The instructor explains the basic concept of square dancing and introduces the first few moves. We practice without music first, breaking down each step.

As the hour progresses, we add music and combine moves into simple sequences. Laughter is common as we occasionally get turned around—it's all part of the fun! By the end of class, you'll have danced through several complete patterns and likely made some new friends.

Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move freely. Soft-soled shoes are ideal (no sticky rubber soles or high heels). Most people wear casual clothes like jeans or comfortable skirts and t-shirts.

Stories From Our Dancers

"I moved to Lake Holiday after retiring and didn't know a soul. Square dancing gave me not just activity, but a whole new circle of friends. We dance together, but we also have potlucks, go hiking, and support each other."

- Margaret, joined 2023

"My wife and I signed up on a whim for something to do together. We never imagined how much fun we'd have! It's our weekly date night now—good exercise for body and mind."

- Mark & Susan, joined 2024
