The accordion calls. The guacharaca cuts through. When that 2/4 rhythm locks into your hips, do you follow the beat—or do you command it?
If Cumbia runs through your veins, this is your moment. The 2024 Cumbia Dance Challenge is now open, bringing together traditionalists, innovators, and underground legends from Colombia's Caribbean coast to Mexico City's sonidero scene and beyond.
The Competition
This isn't another generic dance contest. We've built three distinct rounds that separate the curious from the committed:
| Round | Style | What Judges Want |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1: Raíces | Classic Cumbia (Colombian coastal tradition) | Authentic footwork, proper skirt or handkerchief technique, connection to roots |
| Round 2: Sonidero | Cumbia Sonidera (Mexico City underground) | Speed, precision, and command of the sound system culture |
| Round 3: Fusión Libre | Freestyle fusion | Originality, musicality, and respectful innovation |
Finalists compete live in [City, Country] on [Date], or virtually with broadcast-quality streaming for international participants.

The Legacy
From the shores of Colombia where enslaved Africans transformed European instruments into liberation, to the sound systems of Mexico City where working-class communities built movement culture—Cumbia has always belonged to the people who move it forward. This challenge continues that tradition.
The dance floor is open. Colombia is watching.
