So you’ve mastered the basic Cumbia step and can hold your own on the dance floor—what’s next? Welcome to the intermediate level, where we spice things up with turns, footwork variations, and that irresistible Cumbia swagger. Whether you’re prepping for a social dance or just want to level up, these moves will take your Cumbia from "nice" to "¡Qué sabroso!"
1. The Cumbia Cross (Cruzao)
This foundational move adds flair to your basic step. Start with your weight on your right foot, then:
- Step forward with your left foot crossing slightly over your right
- Recover your weight to the right foot
- Step back with your left foot (uncrossed)
- Tap your right foot beside your left
Pro tip: Add hip movement as you cross—the sharper the angle, the more stylish it looks!
2. The Hammerlock Turn
A classic partner move that looks complex but flows naturally:
- Start in open position, right hands joined with your partner
- On the "back" step of your basic, guide your partner under your raised right arm
- As they turn, your left hand meets their right behind your back (the "hammerlock")
- Complete the turn with a smooth return to starting position
3. Syncopated Side Steps
Break away from the 1-2-3 rhythm with this syncopated variation:
Count: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 Move: Step, tap, step, hold, quick-quick-step
Practice this alone first—the uneven rhythm will make your dancing more musical once mastered.
Level Up Like a Pro
Hip Isolation Drills
Stand facing a mirror, feet shoulder-width apart. Practice moving your hips in circles and figure-eights without moving your shoulders. Do this daily for 2 minutes.
Musicality Hack
Listen for the guacharaca (scraper) or accordion riffs—these are perfect moments to add a quick foot tap or spin.
Remember: Intermediate moves are about quality over quantity. Master these three before adding more. Now grab your dance shoes, play your favorite Cumbia track (try La Pollera Colorá for practice), and let those hips tell the story!
