So you’ve mastered your swingouts, nailed your Charleston, and can triple-step in your sleep. Now what? The world of Lindy Hop truly opens up when you start playing with creative variations that keep the dance fresh, musical, and full of personality.
Here are some of our favorite ways to spice up your social dancing once you’ve got the fundamentals down:
1. Swingout Remix
The Slingshot
Instead of the usual rock step, use momentum to "slingshot" your follow into an extra rotation before catching them on 5-6. Works great with uptempo songs.
Pendulum Swingout
Add a deep sway on counts 3-4 where both partners lean away from each other before coming back together. Creates beautiful visual contrast.
2. Charleston with Attitude
Syncopated Side-by-Side
Replace the standard kick-step with: kick-ball-change (quick quick slow) while adding playful shoulder shimmies. Instant character boost!
The Pretzel Turn
From tandem position, lead the follow into an inside turn while simultaneously doing your own rotation—creating a deliciously twisted moment before resolving.
3. Unexpected Transitions
These moves will make your dancing feel less predictable:
- The Sneaky Slide: Disguise a transition into closed position as a graceful slide instead of a step
- Freeze Frame: Hit a sudden stop on an accent, then explode into the next move
- Momentum Shift: Use opposing body movement to change directions abruptly (great with bluesy songs)
Making It Musical
Variations shine when they match the music. Try:
For Hot Jazz:
- Sharp, bouncy variations
- Quick direction changes
- Playful stops and starts
For Bluesy Swing:
- Smooth, slinky transitions
- Body isolations
- Slow-motion moments
Keep It Social
Remember—the best variations enhance the connection, not complicate it. Always:
- Maintain clear leads/follows
- Leave space for your partner’s creativity
- Adapt to your partner’s skill level
Now hit the dance floor and make these moves your own! The Lindy Hop community thrives when we all bring our unique flavors to this living, evolving dance.
