Hidden in the rolling hills of Maryland, Eckhart Mines might not be the first place you’d expect to find the vibrant energy of Capoeira—but that’s exactly what makes it special. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned player, the Capoeira scene here offers a unique blend of tradition, community, and movement.
Why Capoeira?
Capoeira isn’t just a martial art; it’s a living story. Born from Afro-Brazilian resistance, it weaves together acrobatics, music, and strategy into a mesmerizing "game" (jogo). In Eckhart Mines, local instructors emphasize its roots while adapting to modern lifestyles—think stress relief, fitness, and cultural connection rolled into one.
What to Expect in Classes:
- Beginner-Friendly Drills: Learn the ginga (base movement) and basic kicks in a supportive environment.
- Live Music & Rhythm: Classes often include playing the berimbau, atabaque, and pandeiro.
- Community Rodas: Monthly gatherings where students "play" Capoeira in a circle, cheered on by peers.
Local Spotlight: Eckhart Mines Capoeira Group
The Eckhart Mines Capoeira Group, led by Mestre Carlos (a disciple of Grupo Senzala), hosts classes in a converted warehouse space downtown. Their philosophy? "Capoeira for all bodies." Kids’ classes focus on playfulness, while adult sessions blend self-defense and flow.
"Here, we don’t just teach moves—we teach history. Every esquiva (dodge) has a story."
— Mestre Carlos
