California Ballet Conservatory opened in 2001 and has built its reputation around a structured pre-professional program for dancers aged 12–18. The conservatory runs on an academic-year calendar with mandatory placement auditions each August. Accepted pre-professional students train 15–20 hours weekly across technique, pointe, variations, modern, and conditioning.
Director and former San Francisco Ballet corps member James Alvarez leads the senior faculty. Alvarez danced with SFB from 1988 to 1994 before transitioning to teaching. Under his direction, several conservatory graduates have secured summer intensive placements at Ballet Austin, Joffrey Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. Alumni have gone on to dance with regional companies including Sacramento Ballet and Nevada Ballet Theatre, as well as university BFA programs at UC Irvine and Arizona State.
The conservatory also maintains an adult open division with evening and Saturday drop-in classes.

While ballet forms the foundation of its youth curriculum, the centre equally emphasizes contemporary, jazz, and hip hop. The school divides its ballet program into recreational and accelerated tracks. Recreational students attend one to two classes weekly and participate in an annual spring showcase. Accelerated students—which the centre refers to as its "Ballet Focus" program—train three to four times weekly and may be invited to compete at regional conventions.
Faculty includes studio founder Denise Carter, who holds a BA in Dance from Cal State Long Beach and has coached students for the American Ballet Theatre® Certified School examinations. Class sizes are capped at 15 students.
